Agriculture is one of the focus areas of the WCED. It is an important contributor to our Province’s economy and we need to ensure that our future generation has the expertise, experience and knowledge to contribute towards this important economic sector. Exposing them to ‘real-life’ experiences such as this is important.
An analysis was made and identified that Agriculture Studies is in dire need, because we are surrounded by a farming community. Affluent institutions have partnered with De Rust Futura Academy such as Agri Academy and Elsenburg. They have chosen us for their students to gain practical experience. The school also works in partnership with the local farming communities, including the Cluver Estate, Agri-sector (SA Agri) and various other businesses, including a partnership school in the United Kingdom, Altrincham College.
Applied Agricultural Studies will be a new subject offering to grade 8 – 9 in 2024. This will enable our learners to establish a basis for Agricultural Technology and Agricultural Management Practices.
In 2020, The WCED erected state of the art cattle kraals that were donated to the school by Dr Paul Cluver. He also donated animals for the kraals. For the first time, learners at the school were given the opportunity to work directly with the animals in the kraals.
We are grateful for the generous contribution of land and livestock for this wonderful initiative!
Our feeding scheme is supplemented by our award-winning tunnel production units in terms of vegetables and we were featured in a well-known Agri magazine named Landbou Weekblad for our outstanding Agricultural projects. Our garden has won the Garden of the year in 2022 which makes our agricultural division a force to be reckoned with.
